New Zealand takes Women’s title in Hong Kong

New Zealand have all but secured the overall Women’s title on the World Sevens Series after claiming their fifth straight Cup Final victory of the season. The win over Australia gives the Black Ferns an effectively insurmountable 16-point lead at the top of the table with one tournament left to play.

Canada followed up their improved showing in Vancouver with another 6th-place finish. Seven points from Olivia Apps and a try to Piper Logan was enough to defeat the USA in their first match of the day. Logan had a double in a losing cause against France. With Great Britain too far ahead in 7th, barring a collapse in Toulouse the Maple Leafs will finish in 8th overall at season’s end.

The Eagles rebounded from their disappointment against the Canadians to claim a narrow one-point win over Ireland in the 7th-place Final. Arana Ramsey notched two second half tries to that were the difference. It’s the first time this season the USA has missed a podium finish. They still have a chance to catch Australia for 2nd overall but are likely to finish the season where they currently sit at 3rd place.

Brazil will end the season as the lowest-ranked core side after another difficult tournament that ended on Day Two. The final tournament of the season takes place in Toulouse on the May 12-14 weekend.
