Yacare hold off Selknam to move into Top 4

Yacare put on a good performance in front of their home supporters. Played at the home of Paraguayan rugby, the Héroes de Curupayty in Asunción, Yacare were 21-11 winners. The outcome is that Yacare move into the top 4 while Selknam drop out to now occupy 5th position.

The home side were the better team in the first half. Yacare won both the first and second quarters. The first quarter saw Yacare in the opposition try zone twice. Center Ramiro Amarilla latched on to his captai, Ignacio Inchauspe for the opening points after just four minutes.

Santiago Videla responded to Amarilla’s try. The Selknam fullback slotted an 11th minute penalty. It turned out to be Selknam’s only points of the opening half. Rather than building on their points, Selknam conceded a try and went down to 14. Facundo Pomponio scored from a rolling maul and Clemente Saavedra was yellow carded.

Yacare were firmly in control. Selknam were off their game and in trouble with veteran center José Ignacio Larenas forced off injured. Yacare remained the better team for the duration of the first half and came away with three more points; Inchauspe slotted a penalty with the half coming to a close.

Leading 15-3 at half-time, Yacare were full of confidence. Selknam regrouped to start ehe second-half strongly. Videla scored a disallowed try in the 44th minute. It mattered not as Selknam had advantage and scored one minute later. Rodrigo Fernández got past Tomás Mac Call to score near the right corner flag.

Yacare responded with a penalty and then came close to scoring a try. Yacare won back-to-back scrum penalties five meters out. The third saw Selknam winning a penalty instead. It got them out of the danger zone.

The Chileans opened the the quarter scoring. Good work from Rodríguez resulted in a regulation shot at goal for Videla. The fullback made no mistake from 25 meters out. Minutes later Selknam were close to scoring. Amarilla put his body on the line as a jackal to win a turn-over penalty.

Following a long kick referee Francisco González, with the support of assistant referee Marquise Goodwin, awarded Yacare an attacking scrum in the opposition 22. The call was unfortunate as it was not a knock-on.

Inchauspe finished the scoring with a late penalty. It saw Yacare winning by 10 points to claim four competition points. They now await Peñarol next weekend. Selknam have a Bye before traveling to Colorado to face the Raptors on April 22.
