Ilona Maher to miss remainder of World Sevens Series

Women’s Eagles stalwart Ilona Maher has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Sevens Series. The 26-year-old suffered a broken ankle in training last weekend and will miss out on the tournaments in Hong Kong later this month and Toulouse in May.

Maher has been an ever-present in the USA side since first earning selection in 2018. She has since become a fan favorite with a sizeable social media following that saw Maher acting as a World Rugby ambassador during last year’s World Cup in New Zealand.

While it’s a blow for the Eagles, they will take comfort in their strong performances to date that have them virtually assured of securing a top-four automatic Olympic qualification spot. The USA is currently ranked 3rd overall and holds a 24-point advantage over 5th-place Ireland.
