Dogos hand Selknam first defeat of 2023

Los Dogos handed Selknam their first defeat of Super Rugby Americas 2023. Playing at home in Córdoba, the competition leaders were 24-10 winners. They claimed a bonus point win, an outcome that could be vital later on in the campaign.

The home side started well. Hooker Boris Wenger barged over for a 4th minute try. It came after Los Dogos had controlled the early minutes well and kicked upfield from a penalty. Julián Hernández made no mistake with the conversion.

Selknam looked to hit-back straight away; The Chileans won an attacking penalty and kicked into the opposition 22. Los Dogos held on. Their opening score took considerable time. Matías Garafulic slotted a long-range penalty in the 24th minute.

Selknam’s other visits into Dogos territory did not result in points. Instead, Los Dogos went into the try zone for their second try. It was the wingers in combination. Mateo Soler broke down the left side. He attracted defenders before passing to Ernesto Giudice who stepped both ways before touching down.

Not only did Los Dogos end the first half well, the tam also started the second well. From a wide pass from Hernández, Matías Soler blitzed three defenders to score. Hernández missed the conversion to make it 17-3 after 46 minutes.

Selknam responded with waves of pressure and Los Dogos gave in. Flanker Manuel Todaro and loose head prop Santiago Pulella received yellow cards two minutes apart. Meanwhile, Francisco Urroz made one break and Rodrigo Fernández another. Points were inevitable as Selknam had an attacking scrum. Raimundo Martínez touched down in a pushover try.

Los Dogos had their line-up restored to fifteen players and then went about sealing the result. It came following a 50-22 from Hernández. Los Dogos set-up an attacking lineup to maul move which saw replacement hooker Román Pretz scoring. With it the Córdoba side were 25-10 winners.

Both teams will be in action again next weekend. Los Dogos travel to Buenos Aires to face Los Pampas in an all-Argentine clash. Selknam travel to São Paulo to face Os Cobras.
