Chile XV defeats USA Hawks in Santiago

The USA Hawks were defeated by the Chile XV 41-26 at the Prince of Wales Country Club in La Reina on Saturday. It’s the first of three matches to be played by the Hawks in South America. The development side will face a Pampas selection on Friday in Buenos Aires.

Originally billed as Selknam, in the end it was a young Chilean side that faced the Hawks. Comprised largely of recent national under-20 graduates, it also featured four senior internationals in the starting lineup with another four on the bench.

Chile wasted no time in getting on the board with Lukas Carvallo crossing just two minutes in. The Hawks would reply, however, through Coleson Warner. His try would be the only score for the USA in the first half, with the home side adding singles from Federico Contreras, Clemente Soffia, and Martín Pizarro to take a 22-5 lead into the break.

The second half proved more evenly matched though it was disrupted by numerous replacements. Warner grabbed a double with Marnus Spangenberg then scoring after the hour mark. A flurry of tries ended the game with Cóndores caps Javier Eissmann, Domingo Saavedra, and Augusto Böhme all crossing for Chile. Doyle Hedgepeth scored a fourth try for the Hawks.
