Argentina advance to Men’s Semis in Vancouver

Argentina will represent the Americas in the Men’s Semi Finals at the Vancouver Sevens. Los Pumas continued their fine form with victories over high rankings opponents South Africa and Fiji on Day Two, securing their place opposite Ireland on Sunday.

The shutout win over the Blitzboks was an impressive close to Argentina’s unbeaten pool round. It was Marcos Moneta’s second try of the game, with time up on the clock, that gave Los Pumas a dramatic win over Fiji in the first round of the knockouts.

After back-to-back bottom-eight finishes, the USA returned to the Quarter Finals though they couldn’t quite come up with the goods against Ireland. They had earlier drawn with Spain, a result that meant Canada would miss out despite winning two of their pool matches.

The Canadians followed up their memorable win over Australia on Day One with a dominant showing against Chile. Josiah Morra and Matt Percillier scored two tries each. It would be Spain who they took on next, and three quick tries from the Leones on either side of halftime sealed their victory in the 9th Place Quarter Final.

Uruguay also finished the pool stage with two wins after narrowly beating Kenya. Like Canada, however, they would miss out on the top eight on points differential. Los Teros won their knockout match against Japan, which puts them into the 9th place Semi Final against Samoa.

Chile will take on Japan in the 13th place Semi Final after dropping their second match of the day to Samoa. The 3rd-ranked South Africa, remarkably, will play against Canada in what has been their worst tournament of the campaign.
