Houston adds Andrew Tuala on short-term contract

The Houston SaberCats have signed former LA Giltinis front rower Andrew Tuala on a short-term contract. He arrives just as club captain Dean Muir returns to South Africa temporarily to be with his wife, who is due to give birth to their first child.

Tuala was a standout with the Giltinis last season, playing both hooker and loosehead prop. During the offseason he made his international debut with Samoa in the Pacific Nations Cup, playing against Tonga and Australia ‘A’. He was selected by Dallas in the Dispersal Draft but did not sign with the club.

The 31-year-old is expected to be the reserve hooker against the Jackals on Sunday, with Argentina XV select Axel Zapata getting the start. Muir and Zapata are currently the only senior hookers on the SaberCats roster. It remains to be seen if Tuala’s stay will be extended once Muir returns.
