Women’s Eagles fly past Great Britain into Sydney Semis

The USA have advanced to the Women’s Cup Quarter Finals at the Sydney Sevens after a strong performance against Great Britain. Tries from Naya Tapper and Kristi Kirshe secured a lead that would not be relinquished in a 10-5 victory.

It was a quick turnaround in form for the Eagles, who did not impress at the start of the tournament. They held on to take a narrow win over Canada on Day One, and then fell to defeat against Fiji. Ilona Maher’s last-gasp try earned a win over Great Britain in the final pool match before the rematch result in the Quarter Final.

A missed conversion was the difference in Canada’s opening day loss to the USA. They could not summon any inspiration on Day Two, however, with comprehensive defeats against Great Britain and Fiji. The latter saw them outscored six tries to one.

Brazil were competitive but ultimately outmatched against Australia in their first match of the pool stage. It was a similar story against Ireland, despite a late surge that saw tries from Thalia Costa and Andressa Alves. Their third attempt was the charm, with a blowout win over Spain that included a double from Gabriela Lima.

As Yaras will now compete against invitational side Papua New Guinea in the 9th Place Semi Final, with Canada taking on Spain. The USA’s next match will be the Cup Semi Final against France, with Ireland up against the in-form New Zealand in the other Semi.
