Justin Basson makes unexpected return to ATL

Justin Basson will be playing for Rugby ATL this season after all. The 28-year-old lock had initially departed the side to join the Sharks in the United Rugby Championship. After five appearances, however, he has now returned to Atlanta for a second Major League Rugby campaign.

Last season saw Basson cemented in the second row alongside fellow South African Johan Momsen. The big man packed down on the right side of the scrum in 15 games, 13 of them starts. Aside from set piece ballast, he also proved adept at earning hard yards with ball in hand.

While the unexpected return is welcome, ATL are suddenly overflowing at lock with import signings Nahuel Milán and Jordan Brown, and draft pick Matt Gelhaus also in the squad. ATL have 10 import slots available on match days so some rotation can be expected in the engine room.
