Undefeated Women’s Eagles power into Hamilton Quarter Finals

A perfect opening day at the Hamilton Sevens has seen the USA Women’s Eagles march into the Cup Quarter Finals at the top of Pool C. Both Canada and Brazil missed out on the top eight and will compete for 9th place on Day Two.

Spain were first up for the USA, and Cheta Emba’s hat trick led the away to a dominant victory. Brazil fared on better with Sam Sullivan scoring three tries and Kris Thomas two. Ireland proved the biggest challenge but Naya Tapper’s double was enough to see the Eagles through unbeaten.

The Canadians fought to a 12-all draw with France in their first match, but were then outclassed by the Australians. Their pool stage ended with a disappointing loss to Japan that saw them leading 7-nil at halftime only to concede 17 unanswered points in the second half.

As Yaras had little for Ireland with Thalia Costa’s try the only points. After being shut out by the Eagles, they redeemed themselves with a strong win over Spain that saw five different try scorers including a brace for Costa.

New Zealand completed a remarkable pool stage with zero points conceded in three games. Australia topped Pool B as they smashed France in their final match of the day. The top three seeds on the overall standings have thus far proven the strongest.

The USA will square off against Fiji in their Cup Quarter Final match. Canada will take on Spain in the 9th place Semi Final, with Brazil matching up against invitational side Papua New Guinea.
