Argentina and USA into Men’s Quarters in Hamilton

Argentina and the USA will contest the Cup Quarter Finals at the Hamilton Sevens. The Eagles topped Pool C while Los Pumas were runners-up in Pool D. Canada and Uruguay missed out on the top eight and will now play for 9th spot.

Agustín Fraga scored two tries in Argentina’s opener against Spain. He would add two more against Canada, with Marcos Moneta also grabbing a double. South Africa were a step ahead, though it took a late try from Zain Davids to see them through in the pool decider.

The Canadians had earlier been routed by the Blitzboks in the opening match of the tournament. Shilton van Wyk scored three of South Africa’s six tries. The pool stage would end on a high for Canada, as they held on to beat Spain with Thomas Isherwood’s try just before halftime proving the difference.

Kevon Williams and Perry Baker each scored twice in the USA’s win over Japan. They had been tied at the break before scoring 28 unanswered points in the second half. A 14-all draw against Ireland was next, followed by a convincing victory over Los Teros.

Uruguay would finish the pool stage with no wins from three though they came within a whisker of beating Ireland, with Bryan Mollen’s last-gasp try spoiling the would-be win. Japan was also a competitive match but again it was the last few minutes of the match that let Los Teros down.

The USA will take on Australia in the Cup Quarter Final on Day Two, while Argentina face an unbeaten Fiji. Canada will play Kenya in the first 9th Place Quarter Final, with Uruguay drawing Tonga.
