New York signs Super Rugby center Teihorangi Walden

The New York Ironworkers have signed 29-year-old center Teihorangi Walden for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. He arrives from Taranaki in New Zealand, having previously represented his country the Junior World Championship and with the Māori All Blacks.

Walden broke into the senior Otago provincial side as a 20-year-old in 2013. He was called up to the Highlanders in 2016 and was a starting player in the 2018 and 2019 Super Rugby campaigns. After sitting out the best part of a year with an Achilles injury, Walden made his Super Rugby return with the Hurricanes last year, playing three matches.

Primarily an inside center, it remains to be seen where Walden is utilised with New York. Jason Emery and Fa’asiu Fuatai were the starting midfield pair in 2022 and both are returning. Emery can play across the backline, while Fuatai has considerable experience on the wing.
