Santiago Álvarez returns to Pumas Sevens after long layoff

Former Pumas sevens captain Santiago Álvarez has been recalled to Argentina’s roster for the next two rounds of the World Sevens series. The 28-year-old has been absent for the best part of a year with an ACL injury to his right knee.

Álvarez is one of 14 players named to travel for the Oceania leg of the circuit, to be played in Hamilton and Sydney over the next two weekends. The captaincy will remain with Matías Osadczuk, who will also have the experience of another former skipper in Gastón Revol to lean on.

There is one new name among the group. Alfonso Latorre has been called up for a potential international debut, having impressed locally as a winger with Buenos Aires Cricket and Rugby Club. He is the fifth new addition to the squad this season.

Los Pumas are currently in 8th spot on the overall rankings with three tournaments completed. The top four teams at the end of the season will qualify automatically for the Paris Olympics. Argentina have been drawn in Pool D for Hamilton along with South Africa, Spain, and Canada.
