Luke Campbell will not be returning to Old Glory DC after all. A little over a month after committing to the 2023 Major League Rugby campaign, the 30-year-old loose forward has announced his retirement from professional rugby with immediate effect. The decision comes after Campbell suffered an injury in training while on international duty with Canada in November.
A member of Canada’s 2019 World Cup team, Campbell debuted against the USA in February of 2018. Though primarily a flanker at provincial level, he would find himself used as a No8 for the Maple Leafs. He won 15 caps in all including 12 starts, his final test appearance coming against Spain in July.
Campbell made 23 MLR appearances all told, 5 coming with the Toronto Arrows during the 2019 campaign. After skipping the 2020 season, he signed with DC in 2021. Old Glory remain well covered in the back row with recent additions Alejo Daireaux and KoiKoi Nelligan filling out the roster.
