Premier Rugby Sevens intends to double its number of franchises for the 2023 season. Four competed this past season, with each fielding a Women’s and Men’s team. The professional league will also move to an East-West conference system.
The four existing franchises will be assigned a geographical region this year – Southern Headliners, Northern Loonies, SoCal Loggerheads, and Rocky Mountain Experts. Returning from the 2021 tournament are the New York Locals and the Texas Team. New unnamed additions will represent Western Pennsylvania and Northern California.
This past year saw three tournaments held and featured numerous Major League Rugby and international stars competing. Former Men’s Eagles standouts Madison Hughes, Martin Iosefo, and Matai Leuta all took part, as did Women’s Eagles representatives Abby Gustaitis, Naya Tapper, and Jaz Gray.
A series of talent identification camps will be held beginning in January, with a Canadian stop also being planned. The league says it will announce a full tournament schedule early in the New Year.
