Cayman Islands celebrate home win over Mexico

The Cayman Islands celebrated a home win over Mexico on Saturday. The 35-14 win sees the teams splitting a two-match-series. The first game was played in Mexico City in 2021 with Las Serpientes winning 39-13.

The Caymans’ win over Las Serpientes on Saturday was not only a strong response to the 2021 outcome; it was a tremendous achievement when compared to the prior fixture between the teams. Mexico won the 2019 test match 105-07.

Played at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in Georgetown, the Cayman Islands were in total control early on. The Cayman Islands scored the first 26 points of the match. Mexico’s opening points saw Tobías Hernández scoring alongside the posts.

The Cayman Islands hit-back to Mexico’s score with a penalty. The 29-7 lead was reduced to 29-14 with Andrés Rodríguez touching down for Mexico. It was the final score for Las Serpientes. The Cayman Islands landed two further penalties to finish with a commanding 35-14 win.

The match was the eleventh test match between the Cayman Islands and Mexico. The inaugural fixture was a 13-06 win for the Cayman Islands in 2008. The largest margin win for the Cayman Islands was 46-13 in 2012. The biggest win, however, was by Mexico. Las Serpientes were 105-7 winners over the Cayman Islands in 2019.
