Women’s Eagles charge into Cape Town Semi Finals

The USA are into the Final Four of the Women’s bracket at the Cape Town Sevens. It follows up on their Bronze finish in last weekend’s tournament in Dubai. Canada will compete for 5th place on Sunday, with Brazil aiming for a best-possible 9th place spot.

A late try from Sam Sullivan gave the USA a tense Quarter Final victory over Fiji. It redeemed a poor performance against France in the final round of the pool stage. The Eagles had earlier beaten Japan and Canada to secure their place in the Cup draw.

Canada showed improvement from last week and are now guaranteed to finish higher than their 9th-place result in Dubai. They will be disappointed to blow a 19-nil halftime lead against France that ultimately ended in a draw. A win over Japan put the Canadians into the Quarter Final, but a raft of injuries left them with only 9 fit bodies against New Zealand who cruised to a one-sided win.

Brazil remain winless again after an exceedingly difficult draw in Pool B. New Zealand, Fiji, and Great Britain all proved superior. As Yaras at least scored tries in each game, including two against the Fijians. They will now enter the 9th Place Semi Finals and must win at least one game to improve on their last-place result from last weekend.

The Eagles will take on Dubai winners Australia in the Cup Semi Final, while Canada has a rematch against France in the 5th Place draw. Brazil’s next contest will be against Japan.
