Blitzboks win Men’s title in Dubai, USA finish 4th

South Africa moved to the top of the Men’s World Sevens standings with a convincing Cup Final win over Ireland in Dubai. The USA improved on their results in Hong Kong to finish in 4th, while Argentina weren’t far behind in 6th spot.

After two events on the 11-stop circuit, the USA are tied with 5th-place Fiji on competition points. A late try from Perry Baker gave them a win over Australia in the Cup Quarter Finals, but Ireland took the spoils with an extra-time victory in the Semis. New Zealand proved too much in the Bronze Final thanks to a brace of tries and three conversions from Akuila Rokolisoa.

Los Pumas are in 8th spot overall but are just two points back of the USA. They fell to Ireland in the Quarter Finals, but redeemed themselves with a convincing win over Australia in the 5th Place Semis. Jefferson Joseph crossed twice for France as Les Bleus held on to beat the Argentines for 5th place.

Uruguay started their day on a winning note by defeating Spain in the consolation draw. They then produced their second win over Great Britain in as many tournaments to reach the 9th place final. They were outclassed by Fiji, who only missed out on the Cup draw through points differential, but Los Teros will take many positives from their 10th place finish.

For Canada it was more disappointment. Kenya were the better side in the 9th Place Quarter Finals. The Canadians overwhelmed Uganda next, but were themselves run across the park by Spain in a blowout loss to end the tournament.

The World Sevens Series resumes next weekend in Cape Town.
