USA advance to Women’s Quarter Finals in Dubai

The USA will represent the Americas in the Cup Quarter Finals in Dubai, as the women opened their accounts on the new World Sevens Series campaign. Canada and Brazil are set to finish in the bottom third of the bracket after missing out on the top eight.

It was the opening match of the season that made the difference for the Eagles. First half tries from Sam Sullivan and Naya Tapper gave them a 12-nil lead that Canada could not overcome. A more comfortable win over China was next, but Australia were a class apart with Maddison Levi scoring four tries.

Levi grabbed a double in a one-sided win over Canada. She would finish the day with seven tries in three games. The Canadians took some consolation in their final match of the day with a strong win over China that included a brace for Charity Williams.

Brazil were up against three highly challenging opponents which was reflected in the results. To their credit As Yaras were never shut out, scoring one try each against France, New Zealand, and Great Britain. New Zealand emerged as the dominant force in Pool B, though they were pressed by the British, while Ireland won all three of their matches to top Pool C.

Day Two will see the USA taking on Ireland in the Cup Quarter Finals, following a rematch of Great Britain and New Zealand. France will play Spain, with Australia lined up against Fiji. Canada will square off against Brazil in the 9th place Semi Final.
