New York re-signs Jason Emery and John Powers

Rugby New York have confirmed two more returning members of their backline for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. Midfielder Jason Emery and versatile back John Powers have each committed to a second campaign with the defending champions.

Emery, 29, was a high profile addition ahead of the 2022 season. The former New Zealand age grade star lived up to his billing, starring in the No12 shirt and proving one of the top centers in the league. He played in 17 of 19 matches, 16 of them starts, and displayed an array of talents while taking over as the club’s goal kicker near the end of the season.

Powers returned to his home state after spending the 2021 season with Utah. The 25-year-old product of Xavier High School and Iona College made three appearances as a replacement. More recently he turned out for NYAC in the American Rugby Premiership, splitting his time between flyhalf and fullback.
