Paraguay fall to Córdoba in Cross Border

Paraguay played host to Córdoba on Saturday. The battle between one South American country and a strong rugby province of another saw the visiting side winning 43-30.

Paraguay started the contest well. Las Yacáres held the lead until the stroke of half-time. The half-time scoreline of 21-20 to Córdoba was also based on goal-kicking success in the opening half.

The second half saw Córdoba in control early on, Having extended their lead with tries in the 41st and 44th minutes they then played in the comfort zone. Paraguay hit-back with a try to tight head Enrique Quinteros  before the kickers exchanged penalties. Córdoba scored a late try to win by a comfortable margin of 13 points.

Paraguay’s roster had no shortage of Olímpia Lions players. They were present both in the starting XV and on the replacements bench. Of note is that the same can be said of Córdoba. The province is on track to join the new Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR), Super Rugby Americas.

Córdoba’s provincial team is known as Los Dogos, or the Mastiffs in English. Córdoba players Federico Simondi, Conrado Roura, Facundo Villalba, Julián Quetglas, and Nicolás Cantarutti are all examples of PladAR academy graduates. Will they play for the new Argentine professional team?

Córdoba will play again on Wednesday. The Argentine province will take on Brazil again in Asunción while Paraguay will take on Tucumán. The teams will all play in the final round on Saturday.
