Joe Johnston back for third season with Free Jacks

Joe Johnston will play a third season with the New England Free Jacks. The 24-year-old, who is US-eligible, has committed to the 2023 Major League Rugby campaign, after playing a leading role for the club in their first trip to the playoffs this past year.

Primarily an openside flanker, Johnston started games at all three loose forward positions in 2022 following the arrival of fellow New Zealander Slade McDowall. Johnston appeared in every match for the Free Jacks, with 13 starts, and captained the side in two matches.

New England have already added another flanker from New Zealand to their ranks for 2023 in the form of Mitch Jacobson. Tongan addition Semisi Paea can play both lock or blindside flanker, while Argentine No8 Tomás Casares – who is also US-eligible – was selected in the Collegiate Draft.
