Sophie de Goede nominated for World Rugby Player of the Year

Canadian captain Sophie de Goede is one of five nominees for World Rugby’s Women’s Player of the Year. The outstanding No8 started every game for Canada at the World Cup, and was recently honored with selection to the tournament Dream Team by Rugby World Magazine.

de Goede’s credentials are impressive. The 23-year-old led the team to a 9-3 record this year, including a Canadian record 8 consecutive test victories, with multiple Player of the Match selections in that time. Their only defeats were to New Zealand, England, and France.

Other nominees included two players from the World Cup-winning Black Ferns, flyhalf Ruahei Demant and winger Portia Woodman. England flanker Alex Matthews and France scrumhalf Laure Sansus were the others. The latter is nominated despite missing most the World Cup with injury.
