San Diego signs Tongan flanker Tupou Afungia

The San Diego Legion have signed Tongan flanker Tupou Afungia for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. He arrives from Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand, where has was on the extended roster for the National Provincial Championship though he did not make any regular season appearances.

Afungia plays his club rugby for Māori Agricultural College (MAC) Old Boys and is part of the provincial Magpies academy squad. At international level the 23-year-old has represented Tonga at age grade level up to u20s, competing at the World Junior Trophy tournament in 2019.

San Diego have revealed two loose forwards for the new season thus far, both flankers. The other is former Scotland international Blair Cowan. On the confirmed departures list is now-retired Chris Robshaw and Canadian international Michael Smith, who is focusing on his medical studies.
