Australia win Hong Kong 7s, Argentina beat USA for 5th

Australia emerged victorious as the World Sevens Series returned to Hong Kong this weekend. A last-gasp try from Nathan Lawson gave the defending overall champions the first win of the new season, with Argentina the top Americas side in 5th place.

Matías Osadczuk’s hat trick led the way as Los Pumas cruised past the USA in the last match of the tournament for the two sides. Argentina had earlier lost to Samoa in the Cup Quarter Finals before defeating South Africa to earn their spot in the 5th Place Final.

The Eagles won two of three in the pool stage before running into a superior French side in the Cup Quarter Final. Tries from Gavan D’Amore-Morrison and Malacchi Esdale saw them past Ireland in their next match, but they had no more gas in the tank to draw from against Argentina.

Canada had a mixed showing, losing narrowly to Ireland before beating Kenya in Day Two. Their final day would see back-to-back wins over Hong Kong and Great Britain, but they were no match for a frustrated New Zealand side in the 9th Place Final.

Uruguay enjoyed a promising start to their first season as a core team with three wins from six matches. A famous upset of Great Britain was the highlight of the pool stage, and they would finish the tourney on a high with wins over Kenya and Japan.

The Series now takes a three-week break before returning on December 2 in Dubai. Argentina and Uruguay have been drawn in Pool B, while Canada and the USA will both be in Pool D.
