Canada have summoned Olivia Apps to New Zealand as a replacement for Brianna Miller. The first choice scrumhalf suffered internal injuries in the second match of the pool stage against Italy and will miss the remainder of the World Cup. Justine Pelletier has taken over the lead No9 role.
Apps is a surprise choice. The 23-year-old has spent the past five years focused exclusively on sevens and is vice-captain of Canada’s World Series outfit. A halfback in the shortened code, she played flanker for Ontario age-grade sides before joining the residency program in Langford.
The Lindsay native won’t get a chance to debut this coming weekend as Canada have opted for a forward-heavy bench. If the team pushes through the USA in the Quarter Final, Apps could find herself winning a first cap in a Semi, Bronze, or even Cup Final.
