San Diego signs former Scotland flanker Blair Cowan

San Diego have announced the signing of Blair Cowan for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The former Scotland flanker makes the move to Major League Rugby after a stint with the Tokyo Black Rams in Japan League One.

Cowan is originally from New Zealand but moved to England in 2009 with Cornish Pirates, then joining Worcester Warriors before settling in at London Irish in 2013. Aside from a brief loan spell with Saracens, Cowan would stay with the Exiles through the end of the 2020-21 English Premiership season.

In 2014 Cowan made his test debut for Scotland, who he qualifies for on ancestry, against the USA. He was a late call-up to the 2015 World Cup squad, starting against South Africa and Australia. The last of Cowan’s 18 international appearances came in December 2020 against Ireland after a four-year hiatus from test rugby.

With former England captain Chris Robshaw confirming his retirement, Cowan joins the Legion as a direct replacement. Both share the same age of 36. Other incoming professionals for San Diego include Sean McNulty, Isaac Ross, Marcel Brache, and the return of Luke Burton and Mikey Te’o.
