ATL secures captain Matt Heaton through 2024

Rugby ATL have announced the re-signing of openside flanker Matt Heaton through the 2024 Major League Rugby season. The 29-year-old Canadian international has been co-captain of the side along with South African center Ryan Nell since their inaugural 2020 campaign.

With Nell working his way back to fitness from a serious knee injury, Heaton shouldered much of the on-field leadership in 2022. He made 13 appearances in the No7 shirt and scored 3 tries, leading the Ratlers to the post-season for a second consecutive year.

Two of the four Canucks on ATL’s roster this past season have departed for pastures new with second row Conor Keys moving to New England and winger Cole Davis to Toronto. Midfield pair Seth Purdey and Jack Shaw were selected in the Collegiate Draft. It’s not clear yet if international center George Barton, a mid-season addition, will return in 2023.

Meanwhile ATL has also confirmed the return of star lock Johan Momsen. The 27-year-old South African, considered to be among the league’s top forwards, signed a three-year deal ahead of last season and has re-affirmed his commitment to stay through the end of 2024. He is currently turning out for Life University in the American Rugby Premiership.
