Arrows import Hawke’s Bay hooker Gene Syminton

The Toronto Arrows have signed hooker Gene Syminton for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. Arriving from New Zealand, the 25-year-old was linked to the club through flyhalf Sam Malcolm and forwards coach Francisco Deformes.

Syminton will make the move from the Hawke’s Bay Magpies, where he has spent the past two NPC campaigns. Prior to that he spent three seasons with the Manawatu Turbos, making his senior provincial debut during the 2018 campaign. This is his first professional contract overseas.

Much will be expected from Syminton as he looks to fill the gap left by the departure of fan favorite Andrew Quattrin, who has joined the New England Free Jacks. Sam Mace also left the side, signing for Leeds Tykes in England, leaving Jack McRogers as the only returning player at hooker.
