Pan American Games qualifying spots up for grabs this weekend

Places are on the line in the 2023 Pan American Games. Rugby Sevens will be a sport at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Men’s and Women’s teams will battle-it-out over this weekend in Asunción, Paraguay with qualifying spots up for grabs.

Known as the Juegos Odesur or the Juegos Sudamericanos in Spanish, the South American Games will see who joins the prequalified teams at the tournament in Santiago.

Chile and Brazil have already qualified for the Women’s competition. In the Men’s Chile is the only country thus far confirmed. Chile qualified by being the host country.

Brazil enter the Juegos Odesur as the Women’s team to beat. Brazil is ranked 1st in the region followed by Colombia in second, Argentina in third, Paraguay in fouth, Chile in fifth, Peru in sixth, and Uruguay in seventh. Teams are ranked accordingly with Venezuela and Bolivia ranked as 9th and 10th respectively.

Brazil and Colombia qualified for the 2022 Rugby Sevens World Cup and competed at the tournament in Cape Town, South Africa. The USA and Canada qualified from North America.

The Men’s rankings for the Juegos Odesur are different to the Women’s. Argentina is ranked first followed by Uruguay ins econd, Chile in third, Brazil in fourth, Peru in fifth, Paraguay in sixth, and Colombia in seventh. Peru qualifies comparatively high as a result of a tournament in Costa Rica in 2021.

The competition will open from Friday, October 07 and conclude on Sunday, October 09. It will be held at the home of Paraguayan rugby, the Estadio Héroes de Curupayty. All matches will take place at the venue.
