Angus Cottrell calls time on playing career

Angus Cottrell has announced his retirement from professional rugby. The 32-year-old LA Giltinis flanker issued a brief statement on social media thanking his former teammates.

In his two MLR seasons Cottrell was considered among the best forwards in Major League Rugby. He appeared in numerous year-end select XVs in 2021 after playing a critical role in LA’s successful title run. All told the Australian played 21 MLR games and scored 14 tries. His 2022 campaign was cut short after suffering a knee injury late in the Week 6 game against San Diego.

Prior to his American adventure Cottrell was a stalwart in Super Rugby with first the Western Force and then the Melbourne Rebels. He was called into the senior Wallabies squad during the 2018 Rugby Championship but ultimately did not win a test cap. The following year Cottrell notably represented the Barbarians, scoring two tries against Brazil in São Paulo.
