Mikey Te’o returns to San Diego in Utah trade

Mikey Te’o is returning to the San Diego Legion. The USA World Cup speedster has been traded to his original Major League Rugby club by the Utah Warriors in exchange for second row Jonah Dietenberger and salary cap considerations.

It was Te’o who captained the Legion in their first ever MLR game against the Seattle Seawolves, though he was injured late in the game and missed the remainder of the 2018 season. He stayed in San Diego until the end of the 2020 campaign when he moved to Utah.

At the Warriors Te’o was instrumental in leading the team back to the playoffs in 2021, earning MLR Player of the Year honors. This past year the 29-year-old played all 16 games and scored 5 tries, but was pushed to the bench in the last few weeks of the season by rising talent Connor Burns.

Dietenberger was the 5th overall selection in the 2021 Collegiate Draft. The Lindenwood graduate was named in five match day squads but took the field just twice in his first season with the Legion. The 23-year-old is noted as an effective lineout jumper who stands 6’6″ (1.99m).
