Uruguay celebrated famous victories over Canada and the USA on Day Two of the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town. The results send Los Teros into the Challenge Final against England on Sunday, and means they will finish no lower than 10th place despite not taking any part in the World Sevens Series.
Tries from Guillermo Lijtenstein and Baltazar Amaya gave Uruguay a half-time lead over Canada, with Amaya’s second of the game early in the second half securing a 19-12 win. It was Amaya again who scored the decisive try against the USA, with Lijtenstein’s conversion enough to edge out the Eagles by a final score of 21-19.
Earlier in the day the USA had soundly beaten Wales by 33-5 but they are now resigned to finishing no higher than 11th if they can get past Kenya. The Canadians recovered from their disappointment to also defeat Wales, with Brock Webster’s double leading the way.
It will be Chile who is Canada’s opponent with the winner claiming 13th place. Los Condores were shut out by England in their first match of the day but then scored a 24-21 win over Scotland thanks to a penalty goal from Diego Warnken in extra time.
Jamaica lost both of their matches on Day Two. The first was a shutout loss to Tonga, followed by a 31-7 defeat at the hands of Portugal. Zimbabwe will be the final opponent for the Crocs, who must win to avoid finishing at the bottom of the table.
Argentina were the only Americas team left in the Cup draw, but their only match of the day ended in defeat. New Zealand led by just two points at halftime but a try from Moses Leo gave them enough to seal the 12-5 result. Los Pumas will play twice on Sunday, starting with South Africa in the 5th Place Semi Final.
The Blitzboks were upset by Ireland in their Cup Quarter Final match, the final game of the day. Other Men’s Quarter Final winners were Australia and Fiji, who knocked out France and Samoa respectively.
