Brazil win Tri Nations title with commanding win over Colombia

Brazil are the 2022 Tri Nations champions. Os Tupis won the South American B Championship with a commanding win over Colombia on Sunday in Barranquilla. Brazil’s 52-13 victory followed a 31-28 win over Paraguay on Wednesday. Brazil won both of their matches in the Tri Nations while Paraguay defeated Colombia in the other fixture.

Os Tupis outscored Los Tucanes by eight tries to one. The impressive first half display had Brazil leading 31-6 at half-time. Tries came from set-moves and from phase play. Both forwards and backs touched down in the try zone.

Joel Santos was the first to score. He did so after an attacking scrum had Brazil on the front foot and a numbers game had Santos in to space to score. Lucas Tranquez converted. Colombia hit-back with a penalty though 7-3 was as close as Colombia would get to Brazil during the match.

Brazil’s scrum was also involved in try number two. Andre Arruda scored from N8 from an advancing scrum. Leonel Moreno added another shortly thereafter as the Brazilians were on a scoring frenzy. Fullback Guilherme Coghetto and winger Daniel Lima also both scored in the first half while Colombia added a second penalty.

Colombia opened the second half scoring. A well-taken kick from Santiago Gálvez culminated in a try to winger Alejandro Guisao. With the conversion it was a 31-13 game with 35 minutes left in the contest.

Brazil rounded out the game with three tries. Coghetto bagged his second while Felipe Rosa and Cleber Dias also scored. Colombia were unable to score additional points.

With the title Brazil have confirmed themselves as the fourth best team in South America. Above Brazil are three teams that will play at RWC 2023 – Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.
