Uruguay sweep u20 series with win over Canada

Uruguay completed a clean sweep of the u20 series at Guelph University on Tuesday. They cruised past hosts Canada by a final score of 45-28, though the result was all but wrapped up in a one-sided first half that saw Los Teritos running out to a 33-7 lead.

It didn’t take long for Uruguay to find the scoreboard. Early penalties conceded an attacking lineout, and after a couple cracks at the line Juan Ignacio Cambón drove in under the post defense to grab the first try.

A strong run down the left wing by Nicolás Conti set up Pedro Marsico for a short-range effort, but Canada had a response in short order. The lineout drive was set and after three hit-ups from the midfield, hooker David Scollon barreled in for the try. Jamin Hodgkins chipped over the extras to make it a 5-point game.

That would be as close as the Canadians would get. Marsico broke from an attacking scrum and blasted straight through the defense for his double. He would get his hat trick from a driving maul that saw little opposition from the home pack.

Just before the break Uruguay crossed for their fifth try. Juan Martin David got the credit but it was after a long sequence that left the Canadian defense in tatters. Garese knocked over his fourth conversion and the home side looked to the sideline to regroup.

To their credit, Canada came out with greater determination in the second half. An off-the-ball scuffle resulted in Teritos lock Facundo Rizzo being handed a yellow card. After several phases Matt Klimchuk punched through from in close to to the delight of the home crowd.

The celebrations were muted when David was driven over with help from Cambón to make it 38-14 to the visitors. Shortly after a line break from James Biss sent Alex Bowman in under the sticks to give Canada a lift with under 15 minutes on the clock.

With time winding down Biss would score a consolation try on a charge-down of an Ignacio Álvarez clearance attempt. It was Juan Gonzalez who would have the last say, the Teritos winger snaring a loose pass as the Canadians attempted to play out of their own end with time expired.
