Tri Nations 2022 – Brazil vs Paraguay – ARN Guide

After three rest days Paraguay return to the field in Barranquilla. Having upset Colombia in the opening fixture of the Tri Nations, Paraguay now have their eyes on Brazil. The match will continue the rivalry that dates back to 1970. The 28th match between the teams will be the first played under the Tri Nations branding.

The overall record between the teams is 16 wins for Brazil and 11 to Paraguay. Brazil has achieved the better of the two in recent times; Brazil has won four of the past six test matches between the countries and the past six when including non-capped matches. The most recent fixture was a RWC 2023 qualifier wherein Brazil were 29-0 winners.

Brazil arrived in Colombia following their matches against Chile in Santiago and Temuco. The roster is the same as that which played in Chile. An important change is that the Tri Nations matches are all capped.

Fernando Portugal has gone back to the front-row from Brazil’s first match of the year. No doubt, the Brazilian staff were impressed by Paraguay’s scrum against Colombia. Portugal has named Leonel Moreno, Wilton Rebolo, and Henrique Ferreira to start. Gabriel Paganini captains the side from the second-row. He starts alongside Gabriel Oliveira who was impressive on Saturday against Chile.

Cléber Días returns to the starting line-up. He will play flanker, joining his Cobras teammates Adrio de Melo, and André Arruda in the back-row. Six of the backs are unchanged from the match in Temuco. The one change comes at fullback. Guilherme Coghetto starts the test match.

Paraguay have opted to stick to the winning formula. Fourteen of the starting fifteen that defeated Colombia will also start against Brazil. The only alteration come outwide. Elías Sotelo moves from the right wing to the left wing with Juan González missing out. González’ non-availability sees a test start for Facundo Paivaon the right wing.

The only change to the replacements is in a similar position. Gianfranco Parodi makes way for Diego Argaña as Paraguay’s replacement outside back.

Brazil is ranked 28th in the world. Colombia are 27th and Paraguay are 39th. The countries are positioned as 6th, 7th and 8th in the Americas Rankings.
