Chile downed Brazil in Santiago on Wednesday evening. The home side completed a 36-27 victory in game one of a two match series in Chile. The result came despite Brazil holding a half-time lead and having started as the stronger side in general. The teams will meet for game two in Temuco on Saturday.
Brazil’s strong start was reflected with a 10-0 lead. New York Rugby front-rower, Wilton Rebolo scored from an attacking maul. The try was converted by Lucas Tranquez and the fly half added a penalty minutes later.
Chile’s response was late but it did come. Scrum-half Nicolás Herreros went over for the first of what would be six Chilean tries in the match. The 29th minute score was converted by Santiago Videla.
Brazil’s energy continued to provide the team with opportunities. Tranquez got three points back for Brazil with a penalty. Chile were asking questions of Brazil; it was a match with intensity despite the decision for the teams to play as Brazil XV and Chile XV.
Second-rower Javier Eissmann crossed for a try late in the first half. The score made it a 13-12 scoreline in favor of Os Tupis. Chile would have gone ahead with the conversion; however, it hit the bar.
Brazil’s strong half gave the team time to add further points before the half-time siren. Captain Gabriel Paganini went over for a score which would see Chile eight points behind at half-time. This was so as Tranquez landed the conversion and Brazil were 20-12 ahead.
The second-half did not unfold like the first. Brazil scored one try which was the final try of the half. Chile, on the other hand, touched on inside the try zone for three tries in the half. The first came from a maul. It saw space opening-up and Videla going over in the 47th minute.
Lukas Carvallo then bagged a double. As a player offering Chile with utility value, the scrum-half played the match on the left wing. Carvallo”s tries came in the 51st and 75th minutes. The first of the two was the culmination of good work from Marcelo Torrealba and Matias Garafulic.
Carvallo’s first try gave Chile a 24-20 lead. Brazil did well to defend and not concede points until late. The pressure paid its toll, though, as Brazil was down to twelve men following a red card and two yellows in final ten minutes.
Chile added another with a try in the 75th minute. Carvallo’s second try came on the back of an attacking scrum. Brazil went on to nonetheless score again. The visiting team scored through speedster Daniel Lima. Tranquezz added the conversion. Brazil were beaten though held their heads high after a strong performance.
