Uruguay Secure Core Status on 2023 World Sevens Series

Uruguay won the Men’s competition at the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series 2022 in Chile. In doing so, Los Teros 7’s secured core status on the World Rugby Sevens Series 2023. Never before have Uruguay had core status. Japan won the Women’s competition to also qualify.

Uruguay overcame Georgia in the tournament final. Los Teros 7’s reached the final with a tight 19-15 win over Germany. Diego Ardao scored in the final minute to avoid a repeat of the pool stage when Germany overcame Uruguay.

The final was set-up after the Lelos completed a come-from-behind win in their Semi Final against Chile. Joaquín Huici had scored early for Los Cóndores 7’s against Georgia.

Teimuraz Kokhodze responded for Georgia while Chile found themselves in trouble with Alfonso Escobar yellow carded. Georgia, indeed, made the most of the numerical advantage as Miriani Modebadze grabbed a quick double.

Lucas Westcott got one back for Chile but a late flurry of scores from the Eastern Europeans was pivotal. Kokhodze scored his second try of the contest and Lasha Lomidze also touched down. Georgia won 31-14.

Chile recovered to finish third. Los Cóndores 7’s overcame Germany 14-12 in the Bronze Final. Ernesto Tchimino and Diego Warnken were try scorers for the home side against Germany.

Uruguay had the better of Georgia in the final. The South Americans were 19-5 winners. Their control over play was saw Georgia losing two players to yellow cards in the opening half. Los Teros responded with Peñarol players Felipe Etcheverry and Bautista Basso both scoring.

Georgia hit-back through Giorgi Tchuadze. The try came after Basso had been yellow carded. Uruguay would not concede further points and recovered with Valentin Grille scoring. It made it a 19-5 scoreline and Uruguay were able to then see out the contest to win.
