Australia and South Africa claim Commonwealth Gold

Australia and South Africa claimed Gold Medals in the finals of the rugby sevens at the Commonwealth Games. Both teams defeated Fiji in their respectively finals. Australia were 22-12 winners in the women’s final, and South Africa took the men’s final by 31-7. The two sides will be considered favorites at September’s World Cup in South Africa.

Canada’s women settled for a 4th-place finish after falling to New Zealand 19-12 in the Bronze Final. After falling behind 19-nil, late tries from Piper Logan and Emma Chown salvaged a respectable scoreline for the Canadians. The result mimicked the 4th-place finish of 2018.

The men’s team improved their standing slightly from 9th place in 2018 to a tie for 7th this year. Their only match of the day was a 5th-place Semi Final defeat to Samoa. Two early tries from Jake Thiel gave Canada the lead, but the Samoans fired back with three tries. Cooper Coats scored a last-gasp try but he couldn’t land the conversion and the final score read 19-17.

Jamaica won both of their games on Sunday to equal their 13th place finish of 2018. Mason Caton-Brown scored two tries in the 28-7 win over Malaysia to start the day. It was another double from Caton-Brown that led the way against Sri Lanka, the Crocs holding on to win 26-24.
