Canadian Women to play for Bronze in Birmingham

Canada will have a chance to win Bronze at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday when their women’s team takes on New Zealand. The men’s bracket did not yield success for the two Americas entries, with both Canada and Jamaica falling into consolation ranking matches.

A scorching five-try performance from Krissy Scurfield led the way in a 74-nil drubbing of Sri Lanka in the final pool match. Olivia de Couvreur and Keyara Wardley also notched doubles. Canada could not match Fiji in the Semi Final, however, falling 24-7 with the result sending the Fijians into the Gold Medal match against World Series champions Australia.

Josiah Morra’s brace had Canada’s men even with Zambia at halftime, and they pulled away in the second half thanks to scores from D’Shawn Bowen and Nick Allen. That earned a spot in the Quarter Final but the Canucks were no match for South Africa, who cruised to a 33-nil victory. Samoa will be Canada’s next opponents in the 5th-place Semi Final.

Jamaica would score no points at all in pool play after crashing to a 40-nil defeat at the hands of Uganda. They would finally find the tryline against England, with Tyler Bush crossing in the second half of the 45-7 result. The Crocs will play Malaysia in the 13th place Semi Final.

Detailed results and a full schedule can be seen here.
