Chile is set to confirm a home test match against Brazil in August. The match will be the first for Los Cóndores since qualifying for Rugby World Cup 2023. The match will take place outside of the World Rugby player release window. As such, Chile will field a line-up of Selknam players and Brazil’s line-up will also contain SLAR players.
The match is not yet confirmed by Chile Rugby though Matías Matus Acebo reports that it is to take place on August 20. It will be played in the Southern Chilean city of Temuco. Chile and Brazil also played a test match in the city and at the Germán Becker Stadium in 2013.
Chile won the 2013 match in Temuco 38-22. It was a RWC 2015 qualifier. The tournament at the time was the CONSUR Rugby Championship A with the match being a Round 3A fixture.
The Germán Becker Stadium has a capacity of 18,413. It hosted three matches during the 2015 Copa America. The Estadio Elías Figueroa in Valparaíso also hosted matches during that competition. It was the venue for Chile’s win over Canada during the RWC 2023 qualifiers.
Additional test matches are to also take place. The match against Brazil is likely to be part of the 2022 South American Championship. In addition, Chile is expected to play two or three away test matches against opposition from outside of the Americas in November.
🇨🇱 Los Cóndores @chilerugby will play a friendly game against 🇧🇷 @brasilrugby at the Germán Becker Stadium in Temuco. TBC but scheduled for August 20, this would be the first big event for the national team outside the Chilean Central Zone since 2017. 🏉 pic.twitter.com/LlUEbpG0ya
