Cam Dodson departs Austin for Wasps

Cam Dodson has bid farewell to Major League Rugby and returned to England. Originally from Staffordshire, the 25-year-old lock departs after two seasons with the Austin Gilgronis and has joined up with Wasps in the Premiership. Clubmate Sebastian de Chaves notably spent time with Wasps during the off-season between the 2021 and 2022 MLR campaigns.

A statement on social media reads: “Had the absolute pleasure of calling Austin home for the past 2 years. It’s a shame the season finished like it did but I’m excited for the challenge ahead. Thank you to everyone who made my Texas experience so great.”

Dodson signed for the AG’s ahead of the 2021 season after captaining Grand Canyon University. He played 12 games each in 2021 and 2022, but became a regular starter this past season.

The news is bittersweet for Austin fans, but also for Eagles selectors. Dodson was close to qualifying for the USA on residency and had been monitored by Eagles selectors. He will instead retain his England-qualified status. The Premiership is preparing to change their limits on overseas talent in 2024.
