Big Names on Scotland Roster to tour Chile and Argentina

Scotland will take a roster of 40 players to South America. The Northern British test side will take-on Argentina in a three match series which will follow a non-capped match between Chile and Scotland A. The tour will begin on Saturday, June 25 and conclude on Saturday, July 16.

Regular captain and fullback Stuart Hogg will miss the tour. He and Racing 92 fly half, Finn Russell are out. Adam Hastings and Ross Thomspn are the fly halves. The former plays with three Pumas at Gloucester. The latter kept Domingo Miotti out of the Glasgow Warriors for most of the 2021-2022 United Rugby Championship (URC) season.

Edinburgh second-rower Grant Gilchrist will captain the team. He previously led Scotland against Canada in in Edmonton in June 2018.  Gilchrist has plenty of experience, including 53 caps for Scotland. He and his teammates voted Emiliano Boffelli as the Edinburgh player of the year.

Flanker Hamish Watson is one cap away from reaching 50. He is one of four players that played for the British & Irish Lions on their 2021 tour to South Africa. The others are scrum-half Ali Price, winger Duhan van der Merwe and prop Zander Fagerson.

The tour is to be Scotland’s first visit to the Americas since 2018. The previous tour saw Scotland playing Canada, the USA and Argentina. The 202 tour will be the first time that Scotland plays against Chile.

Chile and the USA are to face-off in the Americas 2 Finals in July. The winner,  on aggregate, will qualify for RWC 2023. Chile’s roster has begun preparations in the north of the country. The USA’s roster is yet to assemble due to the Major Leagur Rugby season and players still on duty with their clubs in Europe.
