Santiago Carreras has signed a new deal with Gloucester. He will remain at the English Premiership club that he joined from Argentina in 2020. He does so as a regular in the Gloucester starting line-up and for Los Pumas.
Carreras began RWC 2019 as a replacement against France. He was then preferred to Ramiro Moyano against Tonga, England, and the USA. He started all three matches on the wing. Prior to RWC 2019 he had two appearances from the bench.
In 2020 Carreras became Los Jaguares’ leading fullback. Gonzalo Quesada moved Emiliano Boffelli to the left wing and utilized Carreras in his natural position. This was replicated by Mario Ledesma in the recent Tri Nations. Carreras started at fullback in the win over New Zealand and both drawn matches against Australia.
In 2021 he began the year in the back-three for Argentina. However, Mario Ledesma moved him to fly half during the Rugby Championship and he played there for the rest of the year. This did not happen for Gloucester where he continued to play wing and fullback.
Argentina’s new head coach, Michael Cheika has noted that Carreras is a talent that can play fly half. His 33-man roster to face Scotland in July suggests that Carreras will be in the back-three.
Carreras is one of three Pumas at Gloucester. The club is also the home of second-rower Matías Alemanno and hooker Santiago Socino.
