Australia wins London 7s, Argentina the best Americas team

A Henry Paterson hat trick led Australia past New Zealand in the Cup Final at the London 7s. It’s the tournament victory of the season for Australia and pushes them up into second place on the overall World Sevens Series standings. Argentina were the best of the three Americas teams with a 9th place finish that sees them dropping to 3rd overall.

Los Pumas watched Terry Kennedy score his third try of the match to give Ireland a one-point win in the last game of the pool stage. That saw Argentina miss out on the Quarter Finals for the first time this season. They would redeem themselves with three straight wins on Day Two, with Marcos Moneta contributing four tries including doubles against Canada and the USA.

The Eagles were Argentina’s final opponent, having themselves failed to qualify for the Quarter Finals due to an opening-round loss to Spain. Lucas Lacamp scored three tries to help beat Japan and France on Day Two but the USA were overwhelmed by Los Pumas in a one-sided 9th Place Final.

Canada were winless in a difficult Pool A on Day One, but salvaged two vital wins over Wales and Japan on Day Two. The results mean they now hold a three-point lead over 15th-place Wales in the overall standings. A 14th-place finish or better is needed to avoid relegation from the circuit.

The Series is now on pause until August when the postponed Los Angeles tournament will decide who claims the title and who drops to the Challenger series. Argentina are within six points of first overall South Africa, and four points behind 2nd-place Austarlia.
