Three Americas teams in the running for 5th in Toulouse

All three Americas entries in the women’s draw of the Toulouse Sevens will contest 5th place on Day Three of the tournament. The USA, Canada, and Brazil had each qualified for the Cup Quarter Finals but were defeated in consecutive matches.

It was Canada who were best placed to advance after winning two out of their three pool matches. Keyara Wardley’s double led them past Spain, and Krissy Scurfield notched the game-winner against Scotland. New Zealand were a notch above and then a late try from Eve Higgins gave Ireland a come-from-behind win in the third Quarter Final.

The first saw New Zealand cruise past Brazil. As Yaras still have a chance to record their best finish of the season if they can claim 5th spot. They lost their first two matches the tournament to France and then Ireland, but Thalia Costa’s hat trick helped them to their second consecutive win over England.

Disappointing results against Fiji and Australia left the USA with just a solitary win over South Africa in the pool stage. They were again drawn with the Australians in the Quarter Final and gave a better account of themselves, but the Eagles were ultimately second-best to the overall series leaders.

Brazil will take on France in the first 5th Place Semi Final on Day Three. The two North American sides will go head-to-head in the second. Contesting the Cup Semi Finals will be New Zealand against Fiji, with Ireland playing Australia.
