Juan Imhoff scores in Quarter Final win to further his place among the giants

Juan Imhoff was a try scorer on Sunday for Racing 92. The Top 14 side were 41-22 winners over the Sale Sharks in Paris. The result sees Racing 92 into the European Champions Cup Semi Finals. Racing 92 will face La Rochelle in Lens next Sunday. It will follow Leinster vs Toulouse in Dublin on Saturday.

Imhoff’s try was his 33rd in the European Champions Cup. This furthered his record as the leading try scorer of all players from outside of Europe in tournament history. Imhoff’s try against the Sale Sharks was his 33rd in the tournament, the number matches that of World Rugby Hall of Fame, Brian O’Driscoll.

Only three men have more tries in competition history than Imhoff. The top scorer is Chris Ashton with 41 followed by Vincent Clerc with 36 and Simon Zero with 34. Clerc retired in 2018. Ashton and Zebo remain active, though neither player will feature in the Semi Finals as their teams were eliminated this weekend.

Imhoff’s try was part of a big week for the winger from Rosario. He signed a contract extension with Racing 92 until 2024. This establishes his future both before and after RWC 2023. The additional years at Racing 92 may also enable Imhoff opportunities to score more Champions Cup tries. If he scores two more in the Semi Final and / or Final then he will overtake Zebo to be listed as third overall.
