Australia emerged winners of the Langford Sevens after a thrilling final against trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand. Lily Dick’s try in stoppage time was the difference, securing Australia’s fourth tournament victory and guaranteeing a first overall finish in the season with one event still to play.
Ireland took third place, defeating France in the Bronze Final. Canada celebrated their best ranking of the season by defeating the USA in the 5th-place final. Brazil earned 9th with a convincing win over England, while invitational side Mexico were at the bottom of the table.
The Canadians had to rebound from a one-sided drubbing at the hands of New Zealand in the Quarter Finals. They redeemed themselves against Fiji with Krissy Scurfield’s double leading the way. Keyara Wardley scored the match-winner in the 12-7 victory over the Eagles to close out a positive weekend for the home side.
It might have been very different for the USA, but two late tries conceded against Ireland cost them a place in the Semi Final. Spain were up next and tries from Ilona Maher, Kristi Kirshe, and Sarah Levy against none for their opponents was a better scoreline, but their North American rivals had the final say.
Brazil enjoyed the end of their tournament with two wins from two. Five players touched down against Mexico with Thalia Costa grabbing a double. England were up next and As Yaras displayed great confidence with Costa one of four players to score in a memorable 24-7 result.
Mexico would finish the event without a win but did manage to score their first and only try through Zoé Tuyú against Brazil.
The series now breaks for two weekends before the finale in Toulouse beginning on May 20. Canada are currently in 7th spot and are assured of pushing ahead of Russia, with an outside chance of catching Fiji. The USA are in 3rd overall and just four points behind France, the same margin separating 10th-place Brazil from 9th-place Spain.
