Canada and USA into Langford Quarter Finals

Canada and the USA have advanced to the Quarter Finals of the World Sevens Series event in Langford. The two North American sides each finished with a 2-1 record in the pool stage. Brazil were 1-2 while Mexico went winless.

The Eagles did just enough in the tournament opener to beat Fiji 20-19, with four missed conversions nearly costing them a win. New Zealand were a class apart in their second match, but the USA rebounded with five different players touching down in the win over England.

Keyara Wardley’s double led Canada to a win over Spain in their first match. Krissy Scurfield, a late call-up to the squad on Friday, touched down twice in a one-sided win over Mexico. Australia proved too strong in the last match of Day One but the Canadians had already booked their spot in the top eight.

Las Serpientes were an invitational addition to the tournament and, to be expected, they struggled with no points scored in three matches.

Brazil were competitive but ultimately second best in their first two games against France and Ireland. Thalia Costa scored a hat trick for As Yaras in a dominant win over Japan to end their day on a high.

Brazil will take on Mexico in the 9th place Semi Final on Day Two. Canada will face New Zealand in the second Quarter Final, with the USA up against Ireland immediately following.
