A hat-trick to Ignacio Mendy inspired Los Jaguares XV to a 41-21 victory over the Olímpia Lions on Friday in Montevideo. The result lifts the Argentine franchise to the top of the SLAR table, though a Peñarol win over Los Cafeteros Pro this evening would see the Uruguayans remaining on top.
Los Jaguares XV began with a bang. Pumas Ignacio Mendy scored a 5th minute try, the first of three for the match. His first try came on the back of a solid scrum and lineout. It was followed by a 9th minute penalty to Gerónimo Prisciantelli. Martín Bogado also crossed for an opening quarter try as Los Jaguares XV did all the early scoring.
The Paraguayan franchise opened their account with a try of their own. A determined barge forward from prop Luis Enrique Quinteros was rewarded as he powered over for a 28th minute try. It meant the scores were 15-7 at half-time.
The lineout to mail trick followed with Ignacio Ruiz adding the first points after the break. The hooker’s 50th try was responded to by Nicolás Hogg who intercepted and ran half the field to score eight minutes later. Los Jaguares XV then put themselves in a winning position as Mendy went into the try zone twice to score his hat-trick.
Late tries to Francisco Diez and Bautista Pedemonte furthered the action, though the match result was secured. Los Jaguares XV had a bonus point win and the Olímpia Lions missed out on gaining competition points from the match.
Both teams will play again on Wednesday. Los Jaguares XV take-on Selknam while the Olímpia Lions will be up against Peñarol. The same four teams are positioned as those that will contest the play-off’s.
